Frequently Asked Questions

How did you get into photography?

I started gaining a serious interest in photography around 3 years ago, while studying Web Development at university. Photography was actually a great way for me to relax and get away from my computer, especially around deadline time! I experimented with a compact camera for a year before purchasing my first DSLR camera. As soon as I opened the box for my Nikon D40, I was smitten. Within months I had upgraded to a D80 and was enjoying photography much more than Web Development.

What kind of work did you start with?

My family stay in a village called Newtyle, which is quite scenic and has great locations surrounding it. I would photograph landscapes and wildlife in all kinds of weather, and generally anything else that caught my eye. Family and friends let me practice my portraiture on them, and I was asked to do family portraits or kids parties for local people.

How did you get into weddings?

As a wedding is one of the most important days in a person's life, I was very nervous about taking one on. I asked local wedding-related shops to contact me if any of their clients would be interested in free wedding photography, and I happened to get a lot of replies! I did around 3 for free, then slowly started charging for them. I also learned from an experienced wedding photographer who allowed me to attend weddings as a second shooter, which was completely invaluable. So far I've photographed 15 or more weddings over the past 18 months.

Why should I hire you?

This bit always sounds like I've got a swollen ego, but I'd like to think that I'm a genuinely friendly person. I'm very easygoing and will happily take the ideas of others onboard. I give you a lot of say in what you want, as my focus is on giving you as much choice as possible, as well as providing great images. I do not have problems directing people, answering questions, giving a helping hand or indeed chatting - as my mum always reminds me, I can apparently talk for Scotland! I am reliable and punctual, approachable and professional, as well someone who always looks on the brighter side of life!

So you haven't studied photography?

Not formally. I'm not making excuses, but to me photography is something you learn by doing. I am currently taking part in an online photography course which will give me a diploma upon completion.

What kind of equipment do you use?

I use a Nikon D90 as my main camera, and a Nikon D80 as my back-up. I have 6 lenses covering a range of 17mm-300mm, as well as close-up macro. I have a portable home studio, which includes Nikon SB900 and SB600 flashguns, as well as a Portaflash flash lighting kit. I have a background support with a variety of different coloured backgrounds, and a ton of accessories. Not expensive flashy gear by any means, but gear I have learned to use and trust to maximum effect!
